Pinacotheca

Decentralized Administration of Thessaly and Central Greece

A pinacotheca board, tablet' + θήκη, thíki, 'box, chest') was a picture gallery in either ancient Greece or ancient Rome. The name is specifically used for the building containing pictures which formed the left wing of the Propylaea on the Acropolis at Athens, Greece. The Pinacotheca was located next to the temple of Athena Nike. Though Pausanias speaks of the pictures "which time had not effaced", which seems to point to fresco painting, the fact that there is no trace of preparation for stucco on the walls shows that the paintings were easel pictures. The Romans adopted the term for the room in a private house containing pictures, statues, and other works of art. In the modern world the word is often used as a name for a public art gallery concentrating on paintings, mostly in Italy , such as the Pinacoteca Vaticana of the Vatican Museums , the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan , the Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli built on the roof of the former Lingotto Fiat factory in Turin, Italy, with others in Bologna and Siena. In Brazil, there is the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. In Paris, the Pinacothèque de Paris. In Munich the three main galleries are called the Alte Pinakothek , Neue Pinakothek and Pinakothek der Moderne. The Pinacotheca, Melbourne, was a gallery for avant-garde art from 1967 to 2002. At Hallbergmoos, near Munich Airport, there was the Pinakothek Hallbergmoos between 2010 and 2014.

Palazzo Vidoni-Caffarelli

The Palazzo Vidoni-Caffarelli is a palace at the intersections of Via del Sudario, Piazza Vidoni, and Corso Vittorio Emanuele in the rione Sant’Eustachio in Rome. The Renaissance palace, whose design, for many years was attributed to Raphael, was almost certainly not his direct hand, but a design from one of his pupils, perhaps Lorenzo Lotti, called "il Lorenzetto". Built between 1515 and 1536 for Bernardino Caffarelli. From there, it became property of Cardinal Stopponi. In the 18th century, the building became property of cardinal Vidoni, who enlarged the building. In the early twentieth century it housed the German embassy, now it houses the Ministry of Public Functions. The building design harkens to a classic Renaissance design likely developed by Bramante in his design for the now destroyed Palazzo Caprini, the home of Raphael. The home has successive layers where the degree of facade decoration matches the function of the interiors. The ground floor is rustic stone, almost fortress-like. The second floor, the piano nobile, is decorated with doric columns. The Palazzo Vidoni-Caffarelli conserves 16th-century frescoes in its Charles V hall that depict events in the life of the emperor. The author is unknown, but described as belonging to the Mannerist school of Perin del Vaga. The palace also contains some 18th-century frescoes attributed to Nicola Lapiccola, Bernardino Nocchi, Tommaso Conca, Ludovico Mazzanti. The interior has some Roman statues, including a statue of emperor Lucio Aurelio Vero, and a fountain derived from a Roman sarcofagus. It also contains a marble portal decoration of the Venetian lion of St Mark from a Croatian city.
